Eyebrow Lifts Gaining Popularity

Most people are quite familiar with the more common cosmetic surgery procedures such as face lifts, breast augmentation, and tummy tucks, but there is another procedure steadily gaining popularity among men and women in the 35-65 age group: eyebrow lift. Eyebrow lifts are also referred to as forehead lifts. If you are unhappy with the lines across your forehead or the looseness of the skin on your forehead, an eyebrow lift just may be the solution you have been looking for.

The Procedure

An eyebrow lift can be performed by your cosmetic surgeon in two different ways. In the "open" approach, your surgeon will make one continuous incision across the crown of the head at the hairline. The cosmetic surgeon will maneuver tissues and remove segments of muscles and skin that are responsible for wrinkles or deep frown lines.

Or, the brow lift can be performed endoscopically with the assistance of a scope through a small incision at the temples, within the hairline or in the upper eyelid creases. Instead of making one long incision, your surgeon will make a few shorter incisions in the scalp. A scope will then be inserted into one of the incisions in order to view the tissues and muscles from a screen. At the same time, another device will be inserted in another incision to make the necessary alterations.

Endoscopic surgery is less invasive than the traditional approach, and the scars are much smaller. The endoscopic approach is typically best suited for patients who do not have deep horizontal lines across the forehead or a lot of loose skin on the forehead.

For the procedure, patients are either administered general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. After the incisions are made, the surgeon will move your eyebrows to a more desirable position. After surgery, you may be instructed to wear a tight pressure dressing for the first few days following the procedure. The bruising and swelling will go down after several days. Within a week, you will notice the changes in your eyebrows. After 2-3 three weeks, the new brow settles and begins to look natural.

A common side effect of brow lift surgery is headaches that will most likely subside after 2-3 weeks.

An eye brow lift is a cosmetic procedure and is not covered under insurance plans. Be sure to inquire about price and financing options prior to scheduling this procedure.

When is the Right Time for Your Plastic Surgery?

The options for changing your body and face are almost limitless, and the results can be stunning. Traditional cosmetic surgery procedures that cut off leathery, thick, lined, and sagging skin long abused by the sun can subtract years from a person's appearance. Laser resurfacing can create smooth skin and remove skin discolorations. Dermal fillers can plump up wrinkles and minimize acne scarring. Endoscopic face-lifts can rejuvenate the face using tiny incisions without any cutting and pasting of the skin.

In the past, many people waited until they were in their late 50s and 60s, with noticeably aging skin, before they even contemplated cosmetic surgery. All that has changed with the advent of relatively non-invasive, lower costing procedures such as laser resurfacing, Botox, and dermal fillers.

Women in their early 40s and 50s may want to undergo cosmetic surgery to deal with sagging corners of the mouth, slight pouching or sagging of the chin and jawline, and folds along the forehead. Though hardly considered aging by some standards, these annoying signs of middle age are easy to change.

There are also endless options for cosmetic procedures that are only about maintenance or reshaping the face. Whether it is acne scarring, excess fat or skin, surfaced face veins, skin discolorations, hair removal, or changing the appearance of your nose or lips, facial enhancement has many options from which to choose.

We are in a new era of accessibility to cosmetic surgery and many people are thrilled to know their face doesn't have to look as old as they really are. There are many options for change these days. As long as the procedure is safe and the results are impressive, people will want to stay young-looking via any procedure that is relatively non-risky and permanent (although all cosmetic surgery has duration limitations).

For answers to all of your cosmetic surgery questions, please contact us online today or call us to set up your personal consultation with Dr. Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center, serving patients in Dallas, Texas and surrounding areas.

Take Care of Your Largest Organ: Your Skin!

You know that exfoliating is an essential part of good skin care, and that it makes your skin look younger and more beautiful, but with so many different ways to do it, you may be a little confused.

Exfoliating removes dead skin cells and help to unclog pores. It gives your skin a health glow, improves circulation, cell replacement, and when it goes deep enough, removes discoloration and stimulates collagen production. Exfoliation prior to cosmetic treatments helps treatment products absorb into the skin.

The exfoliation you do at home is mild and you should do it once or twice a week to keep your skin healthy and beautiful. Treatments such a microdermabrasion, chemical, and laser peels are in-office treatments and can go much deeper, sometimes deep enough to remove precancerous tissue.

To learn about how to have healthy, attractive-looking skin, please contact Dr. Vasdev Rai in Dallas, Texas today to schedule your initial consultation at the Cosmetic Surgical Center.

Rhinoplasty At a Glance

Anyone who is self-conscious about his or her nose will find that rhinoplasty offers a newfound aura of confidence. The procedure can significantly enhance an individual's facial appearance by creating a more balanced nose and an enhanced profile. A rhinoplasty procedure is completely customized to uniquely complement each individual's face, whether your desire is to remove a bump, taper a tip, or build up nasal depressions. After a careful analysis of your concerns and medical history, Dr. Rai will help you decide if rhinoplasty can give you the results you desire.

Your nose surgery will be tailored to match your individual needs so you can achieve the most natural appearance. Typically, the skin of the nose is cut and lifted away from the bone and cartilage framework beneath, then shaped and sculpted to obtain optimum results. The incisions are most often placed inside the nose and hidden from view. When the surgery is complete, a splint may be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. Some bruising and swelling can be expected following surgery, but applying ice and taking a mild pain reliever can offer effective relief. Keeping your head elevated and relaxing in bed is recommended for the first 24 hours following surgery.

To learn more about rhinoplasty or any of our other cosmetic surgery procedures, please contact Dr. Vasdev Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center in Dallas, Texas today to schedule your initial appointment.

Fight the Signs of Aging with a Brow Lift

For many people, the effects of aging can become noticeable in the eyebrow area. Whether it is wrinkling, creases, loose skin, overhanging eyebrows, or frown lines, a brow lift can correct many of the effects people face as they grow older.

A brow lift is a procedure in which excess skin around the brow area of the face is removed, and the skin left behind is smoothed to give people a refreshed, more youthful look.

Good candidates for having a brow lift procedure are women and men who want to give themselves a younger look to reflect how they feel and the slow the appearance of aging.

For a brow lift, Dr. Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center in Dallas, Texas makes incisions hidden in the hairline and pulls the tissue in the brow back so that it is smoothed, and the effects of aging are reduced or eliminated.

A brow lift is usually performed under local anesthesia, meaning that you will not be asleep for the brow lift procedure, but you will not feel any pain. Once Dr. Rai has completed the brow lift, he will close the incisions using sutures or stitches.

Many times, brow lifts are performed as outpatient procedures, meaning that you will be allowed to go home to recuperate from the surgery. However, if the brow lift is performed as an inpatient procedure, you may be required to stay in the hospital for a day of rest.

Many times brow lifts are performed along with other cosmetic surgery procedures like nose reshaping, facelift, eyelid surgery, or microdermabrasion.

Following a brow lift, bruising and swelling may persist in the area for a few weeks, and itching, numbness, and isolated hair loss may occur around the incisions. All of these effects should subside after a few weeks of recovery.

Although work and normal activities can be resumed after a few weeks or so of rest, after a brow lift, strenuous activity and exposure to the sun should be limited. Dr. Rai will provide you with specific instructions.

Surgical Adhesive Being Tested For Cosmetic Surgery

CryoLife Inc., based in Atlanta, and San Mateo, Calif.-based BioForm Medical Inc. have announced that the first patient has been enrolled in a clinical study evaluating BioGlue Surgical Adhesive as a method of fixation in brow lifts.

BioForm recently received permission from an FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) to begin enrollment in a feasibility study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of BioGlue for tissue fixation in brow-lift procedures.

According to a PRNewswire report, BioForm CEO Steven L. Basta says the trial will be "the first for a surgical adhesive as a fixation methodology for browplasty" and that if the product proves safe and effective, "the use of BioGlue may represent an attractive and less invasive alternative for physicians and patients compared to traditional methods of fixation."

BioForm and CryoLife, a biomaterials, medical-device and tissue-processing company, entered into a licensing and distribution partnership in October 2006 for the development and marketing of the latter firm's BioGlue Surgical Adhesive. BioForm is responsible for all clinical trials, regulatory filings and sales and marketing of BioGlue for cosmetic and plastic surgery applications. CryoLife remains the exclusive manufacturer of the product.

Plastic Surgery is Not For Everyone

Even though cosmetic surgery is at an all-time high, some people should simply not get this type of medical work done. The two groups who should avoid plastic surgery are those people with medical problems and those with psychological problems. If a plastic surgeon does not want to do your surgery, he/she usually has good reason. If you have been turned away by a board-certified plastic surgeon, please do not ignore his/her advice.

If you have one or more of the following conditions, you should first talk to your primary care physician or specialist to make sure plastic surgery is safe:

Heavy smoking
Heavy drinking
Diabetes
High blood pressure
A bleeding disorder
Heart or lung disease
Obesity
Severe allergies
High cholesterol
Arthritis

Sometimes, however, psychological concerns are a bigger factor than medical conditions. It is very important that a cosmetic surgery patient understand the limitations and risks of the surgery. One way doctors can assess expectations is through psychological testing. There are some very clear warning signs that might indicate that an individual is a bad candidate for plastic surgery.

Other red flags might be raised if the patient is going through a divorce, has just given birth or is going through menopause. While these circumstances don't always rule out surgery, they do necessitate professional screening to make sure the patient is in the right frame of mind and understands the risks and the most likely outcomes.

An individual with a history of severe depression, particularly if medication is used, should first resolve his or her issues, usually through counseling, before attempting surgery.

Board-certified plastic surgeons are taught early on to make sure their patients are ready for surgery, medically and emotionally.

To speak to a board-certified plastic surgeon to find out whether or not you are a candidate for cosmetic surgery, please contact Dr. Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center today to schedule your initial appointment.

Is There a Difference Between Cosmetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery?

Plastic Surgery, also referred to as cosmetic surgery, deals with the repair, reconstruction, or replacement of physical defects of form or function involving the skin, musculoskeletal system, cranio-maxillofacial structures, hand, extremities, breast and trunk, and external genitalia. It uses aesthetic surgical principles to improve undesirable physical attributes of otherwise normal structures as well as reconstructing defects in someone's appearance.

Special knowledge and skill in the design and surgery of grafts, flaps, free tissue transfer and replantation is necessary. Competence in the management of complex wounds, the use of implantable materials, and in tumor surgery is required. Plastic Surgery has been prominent in the development of innovative techniques such as microvascular and cranio-maxillofacial surgery, liposuction, and tissue transfer. The foundation of surgical anatomy, physiology, pathology, and other basic sciences is fundamental to this specialty.

Competency in plastic surgery implies a special combination of basic knowledge, surgical judgment, technical expertise, ethics, and interpersonal skills in order to achieve satisfactory patient relationships and problem resolution.

There are basically two parts to plastic surgery:

Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve the patient's appearance.

Some of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures are:

Breast enlargement
Rhinoplasty (nose jobs)
Face lifts
Eyelid lifts
Liposuction

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance.
Some of the most common reconstructive surgery procedures are:

Breast reduction for hyperplasia
Burn care
Craniofacial surgery
Correction of congenital anomalies such as cleft palate, cleft lip
Excision of tumors

Sometimes there is overlap with certain procedures. For instance, there can be reconstructive rhinoplasty to correct a nasal deformity, but there can also be cosmetic rhinoplasty, simply altering the shape of a normal nose.
