The Myths of Plastic Surgery Vacations

A search on the internet for plastic surgery will return many options for people considering traveling to a coastline resort or other country for their plastic surgery. Some of these websites claim that you can have fun and relax after your procedure or that you can enjoy a full vacation before you return home with a great new body.

The truth is, you may not be able to have nearly as much “fun” as you would like to believe. One of the most important parts of plastic surgery is the recovery period. For procedures like liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast augmentation, the recovery period is a time for you to rest and avoid strenuous activity. It would endanger your cosmetic surgery results if you were to engage in any sort of physical activity or outdoor exercise.

You might also put yourself at risk for more complications than if you had chosen a plastic surgeon near your home.

You would be best cared for it you are recovering in a location near your plastic surgeon. Imagine flying home after a plastic surgery vacation only to realize you are suffering from surgical complications. Where would you go? Who could you talk to? By selecting a plastic surgeon near you, you ensure being able to speak and talk to the surgeon if any problems arise during recovery.

If you are considering any type of plastic surgery, make sure you speak with a plastic surgeon near you before making any plans to travel for it. Please contact us for a consultation with Dallas, Texas cosmetic surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai today.

Should You Restore Your Breasts With Fat Transfer or Breast Implants?

There have been recent news stories on the benefits of having fat taken from a liposuction procedure and transferred to the breasts. Some women are now wondering if that procedure would be right for them. In the past, fat transfer was used during reconstructive breast surgery, but it is now being considered for cosmetic surgeries.

The idea of taking the fat from problems areas and relocating it to the breasts to gain size and shape is appealing for many women. But the process is not as simple as it sounds.

First, the fat taken from the liposuction procedure must be separated from other liquids before it is transferred to the breasts. Once it is placed in the breasts, the body will absorb a portion of it. Since everyone is different, it’s hard to tell exactly how much of the fat will be reabsorbed, and whether or not the breasts will appear symmetrical once they heal from the procedure.

One of the attractions of this procedure is that no breast implants are used. It seems more natural to use your own tissue for breast augmentation. It may sound like a dream come true, but women should realize there are still risks associated with the procedure.

If you are considering reshaping or restoring your breasts with a fat transfer, please schedule an initial consultation with Dallas, Texas breast surgeon, Dr. Vasdev Rai today. Dr. Rai can help you determine what type of breast surgery will give you the results you are looking for.

Maintaining Your Breast Health After Breast Implants

Over 40,000 women die every year from breast cancer and nearly 200,000 women in addition to that are diagnosed with the disease. It is crucial that you take care of the health of your breasts in order to live a long, healthy life.

Breast augmentation surgery is something thousands of women consider. Today, breast implants do not pose as much difficulty for mammograms, as most facilities have a person who is trained in the slightly different technique used for women with breast implants.

Some of the ways you can continue to monitor your breast health include:

  • Scheduling a Pre-Breast-Implant Mammogram – It’s important that your doctor has a baseline to work from. Your breast implants will change the shape of your breasts, so this mammogram will show what your healthy breasts look like prior to the procedure.
  • Having a Mammogram Performed After Recovery – Once you recover from your breast implant procedure, you need to have another mammogram performed so that your doctor will know immediately what your breasts look like with the breast implants in place. If any changes occur in the future, your doctor will be able to identify them more easily.
  • Finding a Breast Implant-Oriented Mammogram Facility – With so many women choosing to have breast augmentation, there are numerous places you can go that are experienced in working with women who have breast implants.

Breast implants will not prevent you from having the mammograms you need to stay healthy. For women with especially small breasts, breast implants can even improve your mammogram results, depending on your breast implant placement.

Cosmetic Surgery after Major Weight Loss

Losing a large amount of weight is an amazing accomplishment for anyone. But after reaching that milestone, some people find themselves still unsatisfied with their body appearance. If you live in the Fort Worth or Dallas, Texas area and you’ve lost a lot of weight, Dr. Rai has a few cosmetic surgery options that can help you achieve the body appearance you want:

Liposuction – No matter how much exercise you do, there may be areas of fat on your body that are resistant to your efforts. Dr. Rai can use liposuction to remove some of the fat in these areas to give you a better body contour.

Breast Lift – Major weight loss can be especially difficult for women. After losing weight, you may notice that your breasts have lost the youthful, perky appearance they had in the past. A breast lift will remove excess skin and reshape your breasts so they look the way you want them to.

Arm Lift – Fat can accumulate around the upper arms, and after losing weight, you might have large amounts of excess skin. With an arm lift, the excess skin is removed, providing you with sleeker, firmer arms.

We want to make sure you are as happy as possible with your body, and cosmetic surgery can give you a great boost in self-confidence after you’ve lost your weight. Please schedule your initial cosmetic surgery consultation with Dr. Rai in Dallas, Texas to learn more about how we can help you gain the body you’ve always wanted.

Considering Cosmetic Surgery Before Summer

The summer time is great for going to the beach, swimming at the pool, and getting outside for any number of other activities. May is a perfect month to consider cosmetic surgery because you will be able to recuperate from the procedure in time to enjoy the sun and weather during the upcoming months.

Whether you want to add size and shape, gain a firmer looking body, or rid yourself of some unwanted wrinkles or lines, there is a fantastic cosmetic surgery solution for you. Some of the procedures we include:

BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections – During the non-invasive procedure, we will inject small amounts of BOTOX® into the middle skin layer around your eyes to relax the muscles causing crow’s feet and frown lines.

Breast Implants – Many women come to our cosmetic surgery office disappointed with the appearance or size of their breasts. Whether you’re suffering from asymmetrical breasts or breasts that are too small for your body, we can help you gain the breasts you want so you can look great this summer.

Liposuction – Liposuction has been a wonderful cosmetic surgery solution for many years. If you have areas of fat that have been resistant to your exercise efforts, liposuction can help you achieve a slimmer, firmer body.

For some procedures, you will need time to recover and heal fully and for others, like BOTOX® there is little or no recovery time. If you are interested in any type of cosmetic surgery procedure and you live in the Dallas or Fort Worth, Texas area, please schedule an initial cosmetic surgery consultation with Dr. Rai today.

Busting Some Plastic Surgery Myths: Part 2

Yesterday this space featured a blog on three plastic surgery myths. Today we deal with three more.

4. Don’t ask your plastic surgeon tough questions – it is disrespectful
When you are deciding which plastic surgeon to choose, you can schedule free consultations to talk to each surgeon. By all means take a list of tough questions with you and note down the answers (briefly, as all surgeons are very busy people). It is entirely appropriate to ask questions about the cosmetic surgeon’s background and qualifications – in fact it is essential for your own safety.

Ask whether the surgeon has ever had his or her license suspended, or has ever been sued for medical malpractice. (Don’t be put off by one or two such legal claims, because there are so many frivolous lawsuits.) All capable and reputable cosmetic surgeons will be happy to answer these questions, as they are confident of their abilities and track record.

5. Don’t ask to speak with a cosmetic surgeon’s previous patients

If the surgeon you are interviewing is reluctant to give you any contact information of previous patients, that is a warning sign. A reputable cosmetic surgeon will have a lot of satisfied patients who have already given their permission to be contacted by new patients.

When you are trying to choose your cosmetic surgeon, speaking to previous patients is an excellent way to learn about each surgeon. Please see the statements from some of Dr. Rai’s previous patients concerning nine cosmetic surgery procedures that we offer.

6. An extreme makeover is a routine plastic surgery procedure
“Reality” TV is not necessarily realistic – it is primarily entertainment. Regardless of what you may have seen in any such shows, each makeover is customized and carefully planned for you alone. Your makeover would be based on your concerns and goals and on your cosmetic surgeon’s informed recommendations. We offer “Mommy Makeovers” to help you restore your youthful proportions, and will be happy to work with you on any other makeover focus you may have.

Please see our page on Dr. Rai’s Training and Credentials for details on his background and experience. He is highly regarded in the community and always in demand for radio and television appearances.

Busting Some Plastic Surgery Myths: Part 1

Cosmetic surgery is plastic surgery done for cosmetic reasons. Since it has become so popular over recent years, many myths have emerged that need to be dealt with periodically.

1. Only a plastic surgeon can legally do plastic surgery
There are no regulations that restrict what type of medical practitioner may do plastic surgery. That is why it is so important to choose your cosmetic surgeon carefully, after checking into his or her training and experience. For best results and maximum safety choose only a cosmetic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Professional memberships are also top priority – membership in organizations like the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) keeps a doctor in touch with new ideas, techniques, and technology, and in touch with his peers.

2. All board certifications are the same
Each medical specialty has its own certification board, and in fact any group of medical professionals can form its own such board. They all differ. The over-arching organization is the American Board of Medical Specialties. In the case of plastic surgery, ASPS, founded in 1931, is the group designated by the Board of Medical Specialties to oversee plastic surgery credentialing. Their standards are rigorous, requiring both oral and written exams.

3. Silicone gel breast implants have not been proven safe
Silicone breast implants were restricted in 1992 by the FDA to reconstructive use only, and for 14 years were unavailable for cosmetic use. That was the result of a media panic, where numbers of women claimed that their silicone implants had caused cancer or various auto-immune diseases.

During the 14 years many medical research companies investigated the claims, supervised by the FDA, and found zero support for them. Sixty other countries continued using the silicone implants with no restrictions and no problems. While doing the testing and research, two companies developed silicone implants with even stronger shells and even more cohesive gel than had been previously used.

In 1996, the FDA approved their implants for cosmetic use for women aged 22 and over. Those are the implants available now for 12 years which give you a pleasing choice between two excellent types of implant: saline and silicone gel. Both are entirely safe for your breast enlargement procedure.

Dr. Rai’s training and credentials are impeccable. He has appeared many times on radio and television programs and has served in various leadership roles at Medical City Dallas Hospital. You will be in safe and wise hands, regardless of what cosmetic procedure you choose to have.
