According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), Generation X accounts for a larger portion of plastic surgery consumers than the Baby Boomers. In the coming years, the plastic surgery demand among Generation X is likely to increase.

Baby Boomers – people born between 1946 and 1964 – made up 28 percent of the total 2010 cosmetic surgeries and procedures, according to ASAPS. Generation X – people born between 1965 and 1979 – accounted for 43 percent. Interestingly, there are fewer people belonging to Generation X than to the Baby Boom generation.

The high demand for plastic surgery in the Gen X age group may stem from several sources:

  • Today, there may be more pressure to look young, especially in the workplace. This pressure may be real and acted upon by supervisors and managers, or it may be perceived by employees surrounded by younger coworkers. Regardless, many plastic surgery patients report that a rejuvenated appearance can boost self-confidence and make your inner energy and vigor outwardly apparent at work.
  • Gen X celebrities in their 40s maintain a youthful, refreshed appearance. Many people who are the same age as celebrities like Catherine Zeta Jones and Jennifer Aniston may desire a similarly youthful look. Although you should have realistic expectations of what plastic surgery can achieve, these celebrities exemplify what is possible with today’s leading surgeons.
  • Generation X is more accepting of plastic surgery. Past generations may have certain perceptions of plastic surgery. Today, people are less likely to feel embarrassed about their cosmetic procedures. According to a recent ASAPS survey, 67 percent of Americans would not be embarrassed if family and friends knew they had plastic surgery.

Plastic surgery has made it possible for a multitude of people from many generations to achieve an outward appearance reflecting inner youthfulness and vivacity.
