Breast Augmentation and Asymmetry

Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas Breast Surgery

Not so long ago, your genetic inheritance largely determined how your body looked. These days, breast augmentation is just one of the techniques that people, with the help of a cosmetic surgeon, can use to shape their appearance.

While breast augmentation is a highly personal matter, one frequent concern is breast asymmetry, a common condition in which one breast is a different size, and sometimes even a different shape, than the other. Plastic surgeon in Dallas, Dr. Vasdev Rai at the Cosmetic Surgical Center understands that this condition can cause psychological distress to a woman and is ready to work with any woman to help her understand what options may be available.

What Causes Breast Sizes to Differ?

The estrogen hormone motivates breasts to start growing in young girls. From two to four years after the first menstrual period occurs, the breasts continue growing. This is the time in which difference in size begins to develop. While subsequent “catch-up” growth is possible, by the time a woman turns 21 and breast development has gone on for about six years, the size and shape are unlikely to change. However, pregnancy and menopause can lead to changes in breast size and shape.

Only the woman can decide whether a disparity in breast size and/or shape is sufficiently extreme to justify taking action. The options can include breast augmentation for the smaller breast, breast reduction for the larger one, or a combination of the two procedures. In some cases a breast lift, or mastoplexy, may also be advised if one breast droops and the other one does not. Another option can be liposuction, which is less invasive than surgical breast reduction, involves less scarring, and needs less recovery time.

Frank Discussion Is First Step

Dr. Rai realizes that many women are embarrassed to discuss this condition. Many women may not even know that there are surgical procedures that can address it. He believes strongly that a candid, open discussion is the best initial step in making a decision. He will review with you options for breast implants, discuss your overall health condition, detail the possible risks from the procedure, and prepare you for side effects that may ensue.
