Are you feeling dissatisfied with the shape and size of your breasts? If so, you may be feeling a lack of self-confidence and embarrassment as you go about your day-to-day activities. Nobody deserves to feel like this everyday and in time, it may even start to affect your personal life. With breast augmentation, however, women can have more control over the shape and size of their breasts.

A breast augmentation procedure involves the use of breast implants and is used for reconstructive and cosmetic purposes. It is an ideal solution for women who want to achieve the curves and bust size they have always wanted. Before undergoing the procedure, however, it is highly important that you understand more about it.

What is Breast Augmentation and What Does it Do?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty, is a surgical procedure that can modify the breasts with the placement of breast implants. The implants are used to increase the size of the breasts, improve breast fullness, improve breast symmetry, or restore any volume lost due to pregnancy or weight loss. A breast augmentation surgery can do the following:

• Increase projection and fullness of breasts
• Improve contours and breast balance
• Enhance self-confidence and self-image

Type of Breast Implants

If you are planning to get a breast augmentation surgery done, you can use the following types of breast implants:

Saline Implants: These implants are commonly used as they are filled with pure salt water. The best part of using these implants is the saline is absorbed and expelled by the body in case the implant leaks, causing no potential harm to people. They provide more uniformity and firmness to breasts, and are recommended for women above 18 years of age.

Silicone Implants: These breast implants contain silicone gel, which feels more like the natural tissues of breasts. In case of leakage, the silicone gel either remains within the implant or flows into the implant pocket. However, leaking silicone breast implants do not collapse, but you need to visit your surgeon regularly to ensure that the implant is functional. These implants are usually recommended for women above 22 years.

How is Breast Augmentation Surgery Done?

Because a woman’s breasts continue to develop until they reach their late teens or early twenties, the FDA recommends that women be at least 18 years old to get a saline breast implant and 22 years old to get a silicone breast implant. The surgery is preceded by a medical evaluation conducted by your surgeon. Breast augmentation can be done either on an outpatient basis or by staying overnight.

The breast augmentation surgery usually requires two to three hours to complete. You will be given general anesthesia for a painless experience, after which the surgeon makes an incision under your breasts, arms, or around your nipples. The location and size of the incision depends greatly on the type of breast implants used for the surgery. Your surgeon will insert the breast implant into a pocket either above or below the chest muscles.

Once the implant is placed inside the pocket, your surgeon will seal the incision either using surgical tape or sutures.

After the Surgery

Drainage tubes and a gauze are used to clean and cover your breasts after the surgery. It is advisable that you avoid lifting heavy items and performing rigorous exercises during your recovery period. Some over-the-counter painkillers will be prescribed by your surgeon to help ease discomfort. Some swelling in the incision area is common, but you can be sure that it will diminish in time.
