Silicone Gel Breast Implantsin Dallas, TexasIn November, 2006, the FDA approved silicone gel implants for cosmetic use. For the previous 14 years, they had been restricted to breast reconstruction for women who had a mastectomy or some type of injury. Women who wanted a cosmetic breast enlargement were given saline implants. Now any woman 22 years of age or older can potentially choose to have either saline or silicone gel implants for breast augmentation. You can read more detail on our More on Silicone Gel Breast Implants page. The silicone gel implants which are now being used in breast augmentation have thicker shells than previously and use a newer type of gel. The FDA approved the implants made by two manufacturers in November 2006, and each of these companies uses a gel that is more cohesive than was previously used:
These improvements are to address previous claims (later proved unfounded by research studies) that silicone gel leaking from breast implants could cause such health problems as neurological conditions, cancer, and autoimmune diseases such as Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Leaking is extraordinarily unlikely from these newer implants, (a) because of the thicker shells; and (b) because the gel does not leak away from itself. Remember too that silicone is derived from silicon (with no “e” at the end), the second most common element on Earth after oxygen. Silicone is used in hairsprays, hand lotion, dish detergents, and hundreds of other household products that we use every day. "I feel better about my appearance, no longer ashamed of my small chest and myself. This surgery helped my self-esteem and my confidence. It looks so natural; nobody can tell I had surgery. My husband loves it!! I would advice others to go for it! I'm glad I did. The doctor and staff are wonderful. Hopefully anyone and everyone else will be as happy about it as I am."
