Transumbilical Breast Augmentation (TUBA)
Some women who would like to have breast augmentation may avoid doing so because they dont want any visible scars. These scars appear around the areola, beneath the breast, or in the armpit, and those who are self-conscious may find this visual reminder too much. However, with transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA), the only scar is in the belly button. TUBA is also called scarless breast augmentation for this reason. But this is only one of several advantages of the TUBA procedure.
Endoscopic Procedure
TUBA is an endoscopic breast implant procedure. An endoscope is a long, flexible tube with a camera on the end of it. Dr. Rai controls the endoscope by looking at a computer monitor that is connected to the camera. The endoscope is inserted through a small incision made in the belly button and threaded up through the chest area. Because an endoscope is used in the TUBA procedure, saline implants are used. They are placed either subglandularly or submuscularly and then filled to the desired size with saline.
Advantages
- One small incision needed
- Procedure time takes only 30 to 45 minutes
- Very little bleeding
- No obvious scarring
- Faster recovery time than with other breast augmentation procedures
- Lower risk of bacterial infection because the implant does not go through the breast or the milk ducts
- No inflammation or keloid scar formation at the mammary fold
- Less risk of damage to nerves at the breast and nipples since there is no cutting of the nerves in these locations
- In the event of a need for another breast augmentation, the TUBA procedure can be performed again
- Reactions to anesthesia
- Post-surgical pain
- Implant deflation, though the saline liquid is safely absorbed by your body
- Capsular contracture, or scar tissue forming around the implant which causes the area to feel hard and tight
