Immediately After Rhinoplasty

You will need someone to drive you to and from Dr. Rai’s surgery center. This person will also be needed for the first 12-24 hours following the rhinoplasty procedure to help you. Dr. Rai will place a splint on your nose for protection and support. The splint will be removed after 5-7 days.

You may also have a bandage under your nose to catch any drainage. It is very common for mucus and old blood to drain from the nose for a few days after rhinoplasty. Dr. Rai will give you instructions on how often to change the bandage.

Swelling and bruising around the eyes, cheeks, and nose will be greatly visible immediately after the procedure. Much of the swelling and bruising will fade in the initial 3-7 days of your recovery and may last for a couple of weeks. Some minor swelling that will only be noticeable to you and Dr. Rai will last up to six months or a year. Your final rhinoplasty results will be apparent after all of the swelling subsides. Please note that the swelling and bruising immediately following the procedure will distort your appearance and does not reflect your final results.

Dr. Rai will give you detailed instructions for your recovery. He will inform you of when you can return to work and other activities such as exercising and heavy lifting. Some things you will want to keep in mind during the first several weeks of your recovery are:

  • Avoid exercising and other strenuous activities
  • Do not swim or get your nose splint wet
  • Try not to blow your nose
  • Gently brush your teeth for minimal movement of your mouth
  • Wear clothing that you do not need to pull over your head
  • Eat foods that do not require heavy chewing
