Arm Lifts Skyrocket over past Decade
In 2000, 338 arm lift procedures were performed. In 2012, 15,457 arm lifts were performed. That’s an increase of 4,473 percent over 10 years.
What can we attribute to the dramatic rise in arm lift procedures? Experts have a few explanations:
- Trend of massive weight loss: Gastric bypass surgery, weight-loss reality TV, and diet and exercise have caused many people to lose massive amounts of weight in recent years, which leaves behind loose, sagging skin. No amount of arm exercises can re-tighten this skin, and an arm lift and other post weight-loss procedures remove it.
- Female celebrities with toned arms: First Lady Michelle Obama, Jennifer Aniston and Kelly Ripa are just a few of the celebrities who go sleeveless often, showing their toned, defined arms. With these women in the public eye, many women wish to emulate this arm shape.
- New techniques: A doctor’s article on the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ website says he believes new techniques and technologies are part of the trend. Even though arm lifts still leave a scar, they can be made more minimal and less noticeable in this day and age.
An arm lift does require a long incision from armpit to elbow. For many people with loose, sagging skin on their arms, the benefit of the procedure outweighs the presence of the scar. If you do not have loose skin and are only moderately overweight, liposuction may be more effective. Liposuction does not remove sagging skin, but it removes excess fat in your arms.
