Can Liposuction prevent Skin Cancer?
Is it possible that fat removal, perhaps through liposuction or a tummy tuck, can prevent the risk of skin cancer? Researchers at Rutgers University have found that removing abdominal fat from mice decreased the incidence of the mice getting skin cancer from UV light, according to a news release from Rutgers. Scientists are not sure what this research means for humans.
The mice were fed a diet high in fat. The abdominal fat was surgically removed, and those mice had as many as 80 percent fewer cases of skin cancer than the mice who did not have their fat removed. The study seems to show that a protein secreted from the fat increased the risk of cancer.
It is known that obesity in humans is linked to an increased risk of cancer and other health conditions, but it is not known whether reducing the fat would reduce these risks.
Body contouring procedures like liposuction can define your curves by removing pockets of fat. If you have recently lost a significant amount of weight, a tummy tuck is a body contouring procedure that removes the sagging apron of skin around your midsection.
