Many patients considering breast enlargement ask us: How Will My Dallas Breast Surgeon Prevent My Silicone Gel Breast Implants From Leaking? Today’s silicone gel implants are not prone to leak, even in the rare case that they crack or rupture. Older silicone implants were made differently, and they were much more likely to leak, and saline implants will leak if the casing is breached. If you are considering breast augmentation in Dallas and would like to learn more about breast implant safety – including with silicone gel breast implants, please contact Dr. Rai today.

Silicone Gel vs. Liquid Silicone

Since 2006, silicone implants have contained a silicone gel, rather than liquid silicone. In 1992, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) restricted the use of silicone implants so that it could study the safety of the implants and investigate whether leaked silicone could lead to serious health problems.

The old silicone breast implants contained liquid silicone which could leak out and spread throughout the body, if the implant cracked or ruptured. After 14 years, the FDA approved silicone gel implants for use in breast augmentation surgery.

Today’s silicone gel breast implants have thicker shells, so they are less likely to crack or rupture. In the event that they do, they gel tends to stay together, with little or no leakage away from the implant. Proper placement by an experienced and highly skilled surgeon  such as Dallas board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai further reduces the risk of cracking or leaking.
