Will I Lose Sensation in My Breasts from Breast Augmentation?
Many women ask: Will I lose sensation in my breasts from breast augmentation? Initially, most patients experience come numbness after surgery. This can last for four to six months, with the feeling returning gradually. Occasionally some numbness persists beyond six months. The risk of long-term loss of sensation depends on the size of implant and incision placement, but permanent numbness is very rare. During your comprehensive consultation, Dr. Rai will talk you through the process and what you can expect, including the recovery stages.
Temporary Numbness
Temporary numbness is normal, and you should not be concerned if it has been less than six months after your surgery. Enlarging your breasts stretches the sensory nerves and they need time to recover.
Larger implants mean more stretching, so choosing maximum enlargement means sensation could take longer to return. In some cases, some loss of sensation can even be permanent, but even with very large implants permanent numbness is rare.
Numbness may be experienced in the nipples or breast tissue. Incision placement also affects loss of sensation. The inframammary fold incision, made under the breast, is associated with the least loss of sensation. As you probably guessed, the incision around the nipple, called periareolar incision, carries an increased risk or permanent loss of sensation.
