Your Liposuction Procedure
Dr. Rai performs both tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction in his Dallas surgery center. During your liposuction consultation, Dr. Rai will discuss which is most appropriate to address your cosmetic goals. Both types of liposuction are effective for removing unwanted fat deposits and leaving you with attractive body contours.
Either type of liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, which is administered by a qualified MD anesthesiologist. General anesthesia provides a safer surgical environment. It eliminates the risk of inadvertent body movements that could adversely impact your results, and it provides you with a greater level of comfort during the procedure.

Liposuction is not an effective weight loss procedure. It is intended to remove small fatty deposits to sculpt your curves into more pleasing contours. You should be at or near your ideal weight and able to maintain that weight. Weight fluctuations will affect your results.
Ideal candidates are at a healthy BMI and simply need assistance removing those last remnants of fat. They also have the following characteristics in common:
- Good skin elasticity to firm over your new contours
- Good overall health
- Non-smokers (or the ability to quit at least six weeks before your procedure)
- Realistic expectations for your results
Liposuction can provide patients with amazing results, but if you are looking for a more dramatic change or are embarrassed by excess sagging skin and tissue from weight loss or pregnancy, you may want to consider combining liposuction with tummy tuck or our mommy makeover.

Any patient who is a candidate for traditional liposuction is usually also a good candidate for the tumescent technique. Unlike traditional liposuction, which is an outdated “dry” procedure, tumescent liposuction uses an injected saline solution to swell the targeted fat for easier removal.
During your procedure, Dr. Rai will inject the saline solution, which also contains a local anesthetic, into the areas to be sculpted. The amount of saline injected is generally equal to or larger than the amount of targeted fat in volume. Once the fatty tissue swells in size because of the solution, Dr. Rai can easily identify the fat to be removed. He will make small incisions to extract the unwanted fat through a cannula, a narrow surgical instrument designed specifically for the procedure.
Recovery from tumescent liposuction is typically quick with a minimal amount of swelling and bruising in the treated areas. The long-acting effects of the anesthetic solution help to provide relief from pain after the procedure and reduce the need for additional pain medication.

Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL) is a variation of tumescent liposuction. With UAL, the cannula used to suction out unwanted fat actually vibrates from ultrasound (sound vibrations above the range of human hearing). The ultrasound vibrations liquefy the fat more quickly, allowing Dr. Rai to remove the fat more easily.
Recovery from ultrasonic liposuction can be quicker with less discomfort depending on the extent of your procedure.
Ultrasonic liposuction is especially useful in larger volume liposuction procedures or in more difficult areas, such as the back or for enlarged male breasts. Dr. Rai will recommend the appropriate type of liposuction after reviewing your cosmetic goals with you during your consultation.

Will I lose weight with liposuction?
Liposuction is not an effective weight loss tool. It is a body contouring procedure that can help you get rid of stubborn fat deposits when you are stable at your ideal weight. You may lose some weight as a result of your liposuction, but the real benefit is the size reduction of your excess bulges.
How long is liposuction recovery?
Dr. Rai performs liposuction with general anesthesia. You will need 1-3 hours of post-anesthesia observation before you are released to return home. Most of our Dallas area patients feel comfortable returning to light work and light activities within a few days.
Is liposuction dangerous?
Liposuction is one of the safest procedures in cosmetic surgery. When performed properly by a board-certified plastic surgeon, liposuction is very safe. At the Cosmetic Surgical Center, Dr. Vasdev Rai is highly trained in all aspects of plastic surgery to ensure you a safe procedure with beautiful results.

What to Expect After Liposuction
Immediately after your liposuction procedure, we will monitor you as you wake up from general anesthesia. When we determine that you are ready to go home, a loved one or other responsible adult will need to pick you up and stay with you for 24 hours. We give this person detailed instructions verbally and in writing about how to care for you. You should spend the first day focused on resting.
The day after surgery, you should feel well enough to get up and walk around. In fact, we encourage you to do so. Short, easy walks will stimulate your circulatory system and aid your recovery. You will experience some discomfort, but likely it will be easily controlled with the prescription medication you will be given. You may also have numbness, swelling, and bruising in the treated area. This is normal.
Most patients return to work about a week after their liposuction procedure. For a few weeks, you will wear a compression garment designed to help your body heal into its desired contours. Although you can resume light activities, you should avoid strenuous activities for at least three weeks. Your results will continue to improve and will be fully evident by 6-9 months following your procedure.
