Tummy Tuck to Remove Abdominal Scarring
Sometimes a tummy tuck is used to get rid of scars in the lower part of the abdomen (abdominal scarring). We have encountered this need in two specific situations, namely:
- Burns that have left behind burn scars on lower abdomen
- Long up and down scars on the abdomen from exploratory surgery, most often for ovarian cancer.
In both these situations a low bikini line incision is used to lift and then remove the scarred part of abdominal skin and then pull down normal skin from upper abdomen to replace it.

Above is the BEFORE image of a girl in early 20s. She had to have an abdominal exploration for diagnosing and staging ovarian cancer. She consulted with us when she was cancer free but not free from marks left behind in the form of an up and down scar and distortion of her belly button.
She had tried scar creams and lasers with no improvement.
An abdominoplasty technique was used to remove the whole segment of the affected abdominal skin along with its scar.
The AFTER picture below shows her new appearance.
The new scar is well below her bikini line and easily covered.
This gave her a new freedom and the reminder of her cancer surgery was gone.
A similar approach is used to deal with other abdominal scars resulting from injuries and burns.
Together with our oncological colleagues we can now offer this new approach to cancer surgeries.
When a patient desires to avoid visible abdominal scars we approach it pre-emptively. An up and down incision is never made. We make a bikini line incision and lift the abdominal skin out of harm’s way. The cancer surgery is done by the oncological surgeon. The raised skin is then returned to its original place and repaired with a scar that is easy to hide.
