According to a recent study, patients who choose to have body contouring procedures performed following weight loss through bariatric surgery are more likely to maintain a healthy BMI.
The study, fifteen years in the making, followed patients between the ages of 18 and 50 who had undergone laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB). Those who chose to follow initial weight loss with plastic surgery procedures maintained an average BMI of 24.6, which is within the range considered healthy by the CDC. Those who did not undergo post-bariatric body contouring procedures maintained an average BMI of 31, which is at the lower end […]
A tummy tuck is a more invasive surgical procedure than liposuction. Liposuction involves tiny incisions and only removes stubborn pockets of fat. Tummy tuck procedures remove excess skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. For some patients, a tummy tuck is necessary to achieve their desired results, while others would not benefit from the procedure. During your comprehensive consultation, Dr. Rai will help you decide which procedure or combination of procedures will benefit you the most.
Why Some Patients Need a Tummy Tuck?
If you have excess skin and/or abdominal muscles which have been stretched beyond the point that they can regain their […]
Proper use of compression garments is imperative after most liposuction procedures. In fact, you should think of it not only as part of recovery, but as part of the procedure itself, because it helps complete the process of creating your new shape. Compression garments also help to prevent post-operative complications following liposuction. We understand that no one likes to wear compression garments, and we hope that you will understand how important they are for your health and the final results of your surgery.
Wearing Your Compression Garments Following Liposuction
After liposuction you will typically need to wear compression garments for several weeks. […]

A thigh lift is a body contouring procedure that removes excess, sagging skin from the upper legs. If you have small amounts of excess fat in the upper leg, Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Vasdev Rai can remove that during a thigh lift as well. However, if it is only excess fat that is detracting from your appearance, liposuction alone may be sufficient to meet your needs.
Thigh lift surgery is often performed in conjunction with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or buttock lift, and is a perfect complement to other post-weight loss contouring procedures. During your initial consultation with […]
A recent study examined the quality-of-life outcomes of bariatric patients who received body contouring procedures after weight loss.
The study was relatively small, including only 33 patients. All 33 underwent body contouring after weight-loss surgery. Many of the patients had tummy tucks or breast surgery. Throughout the seven years following surgery, the patients were asked to complete recurring questionnaires to measure quality of life. Using the scores from quality-of-life assessments, the researchers found patients have significant and sustained improvement in their quality-of-life following body contouring surgery.
Fifty-five percent of the patients were “very satisfied” with their results, while some other patients were […]

Researchers from Brunel University have extended findings about facial aesthetics to apply to the shape of the body as well.According to researchers, human beings find symmetry in the body as important to attractiveness as symmetry in the face. The work suggests that people do not detect symmetry directly, but key into features of the anatomy that appear as attractive components for either a masculine or feminine body.
The new work represents an improvement over previous work in that it does not depend on manual measurements with calipers.Instead, it utilized a 3D optical scanner to create a detailed image of 77 individuals, approximately […]
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery published a study in the July/August issue of its organ Aesthetic Surgery Journal that showed that the risk a patient incurs during body contouring procedures is strongly related to the patient’s body mass index (BMI).
In a retrospective review of 129 patients who underwent a single body contouring procedure between 1993 and 2004 researchers correlated actual complications experienced with BMIs.Complication rates were complicated for patients in five BMI categories:ideal (BMI less than 25), overweight (BMI 25-30), obese (BMI 31-35), morbidly obese (BMI 36-40), and severely morbidly obese (BMI 41 and greater). Both minor complications (such […]
