Buyer Beware of BOTOX® Bargains

When the economy slows down and shrinks, as it has been doing lately, discounts become more frequent and more attractive. You may have seen some advertising for low-price BOTOX treatments or cheap skin treatments using dermal fillers like Restylane®. Perhaps you have also seen recent news about Heparin imported from China which caused deaths and various furniture items made in China which injured babies. It need not be China who exports defective products to the U.S. They could come from anywhere. When the FDA approves a medication or a treatment substance like BOTOX, it approves a specific form of it, tested in […]

What is Anesthesia?

The term anesthesia was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1846 and comes from two Greek words meaning “without sensation”. An anesthetic is not the same as an analgesic. We buy many analgesics over-the-counter, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen and they block the sensation of pain. There are also prescription analgesics. Anesthesia is a broader term and comes in several forms or levels. General Anesthesia A general anesthetic blocks all sensations – pain, itch, pressure, hearing, sight, etc. It renders a person unconscious and blocks memory of the surgery. That person cannot breathe on their own and must be given oxygen. They […]

The February issue of the journal Ophthalmology has the findings of a study done on how people judge age and fatigue. The participants were 47 college students in the Boston area. They were asked to look on a computer monitor at photos of 48 older people and rate either the age or the fatigue level of each person. The monitor was set up to track where their eyes focused. Study Results When they analyzed all the data, researchers found that the students had looked at: The eyes 46 percent of the time The nose 19 percent of the time The forehead 13 percent of the […]

The Many Faces of BOTOX (R)

With the economic downturn and rounds of layoffs happening, non-invasive cosmetic procedures have become more popular. It seems that to reduce their chances of being laid off, some people try to avoid taking time off work, such as the week or two of recovery time which would be required after a facelift. The so-called “lunchtime” procedures — which are completed in an hour or less — are most often requested. This includes dermal fillers such as Restylane and Sculptra, and BOTOX (R). Other procedures which involve short recovery times are also in demand, such as injectable breast enhancers, and SmartLipo which works […]

Facial Cosmetic Surgery for Men Too

As cosmetic surgery continues to expand its offerings and become better known to the general public, more men are becoming interested in improving their appearance. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery collects statistics each year as to how many times each cosmetic procedure is performed. For 2007, liposuction was the most popular male procedure, with 57,980 procedures and BOTOX(R) was the most popular non-invasive procedure. BOTOX attained that top place for all age groups of women, men, and women and men combined. One of the procedures that has been increasing in popularity with men is the chin implant. A receding chin […]

I Wanna Look Like Someone Else!

Recently the U.K. Daily Star did a poll among females as to which pop culture star they would most like to resemble. Britney Spears got 44 percent of the votes with Julianne Hough in second place with just 11 percent. Last week the director of a Beverly Hills cosmetic surgery clinic said in an interview: “We’ve had three women in the past six weeks come in clutching very recent magazine photos of Britney.” One wanted liposuction for her abdomen to look like Britney’s One wanted a nose surgery to get a Britney nose One just said, “Make me look as close to her as possible The […]

Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Psychiatrists have been hard at work and have discovered a new mental disorder which relates to cosmetic surgery. Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) begins in early adolescence when a person (usually a girl) becomes aware of her appearance and dislikes it. This is not a rational assessment of one’s appearance however. A person with BDD is excessively preoccupied with their appearance and continually looking for flaws. BDD can get in the way of daily activities, school work, or doing one’s job properly. It can even turn a person into a social recluse. Some of the signs of BDD are: Wearing too much makeup Being camera-shy Shopping […]

Losing Weight: Some Basic Concepts

Some people make weight loss into a time-consuming daily chore with calorie counting, special diets, support groups, grueling exercise programs, gym expenses, and great will power struggles. It does not have to be so complicated. The basic principle is simple: Take in fewer calories than you use up each day If you want to be precise that does mean a couple of calculations at the outset. You can then develop a routine of food types and varieties along with regular exercise of some type. Once you get into the new rhythm you can forget about any daily struggle and just weigh yourself […]

What is a Scar?

Any time the skin surface is breached down through the second skin layer called the dermis, a scar will form. Scarring is the body’s way of healing the incision, burn or accidental cut. Fibrous connective tissue forms at the site and draws the skin edges together, forming a ridge which may be straight or may not, depending on the nature of the wound. Scar Features A skin scar has no hair follicles, blood vessels or sweat glands. It is not the same as skin cells and is more susceptible to UV rays. Scars typically take about a year to fully heal, shrink […]

How Not to do Cosmetic Surgery

In the news lately has been some coverage of Donatella Versace’s current appearance, evidently the result of plastic surgery. Her age is 53. She has lost a lot of weight and now has a skeletal appearance in bikini photographs. That reveals the clear outline of her breast implants. Instead of being submerged beneath natural tissue they form two perfect circles with an unnatural look. One cosmetic surgeon who was questioned about it opined that they contained about 300 cc. Severe suntanning combined with long platinum blond hair looks like an attempt to be 18 years old. The facial skin looks firm […]
