What is an Open Rhinoplasty?

Open Rhinoplasty is done through an external incision in the columella of the nose (the structure between the nostrils connecting the tip of nose to the base of the lip). This incision connects with other incisions on the inner surface of the nostrils and the skin of the nose is lifted off the bones and cartilage of the nose. Modifications of cartilage and bone are then performed under direct vision. The skin is then rolled back and the incision is closed. Usually the scar heals well. However, there is a small possibility of excessive scarring.

What is a Closed Rhinoplasty?

Closed Rhinoplasty is done without an external incision. All the incisions are made in the inner lining of nose. The surgeon then visualizes the structures from inside and makes the modifications. There is no external scar.

How does Dr Rai perform Rhinoplasty?

Dr Rai prefers the closed technique for most of his rhinoplasties. The open approach is reserved for severe deformities and cases that require cartilage grafts.

What is the recovery time after Rhinoplasty?

It is usually five to seven days. After Rhinoplasty, a splint is used to provide support and protection to the modified nose. The splint is removed after five to seven days. Swelling, however, is noticeable for two to three weeks. The shape of the nose continues to refine for the next six to twelve months.

Is it painful?

Most patients require only mild pain medication after Rhinoplasty. Many of our patients are satisfied with extra strength Tylenol.
